California Urban Design Camp — 2-Day Spotlight

During Thanksgiving week, Growth Notes organized a 2-day “Urban Design for Kids” camp for the children of migrant workers at Hijas del Campo in California.

The camp welcomed a small group of about eight students, ranging from early elementary to middle school. Many arrived shy and hesitant, unsure of what to expect. Through creative activities and a relaxed environment, students quickly grew more comfortable, talkative, and eager to participate.

On the first day, students explored how cities are organized by mapping familiar places and imagining “dream cities” of their own. Some designs stretched in long lines, while others imagined underwater homes protected by bubbles. These activities introduced architecture as a way to think creatively about space, community, and possibility.

The second day focused on how architects balance structure, function, and beauty. Students designed and built physical models of buildings, then worked together to combine their creations into one shared city, complete with roads and neighborhoods.

By the end of the camp, students who began quietly were confidently sharing ideas, collaborating with one another, and proudly presenting their designs—demonstrating the power of creativity, teamwork, and hands-on learning.
